Chita was returned to her elderly owner on July 24, 2024. Her owner could not afford to pay for spaying, but she was very glad that we took care of it. Chita is doing well now: our volunteer still sometimes sees her in the yard.
But Chita’s story is quite terrible. Please do not read further if you are in a vulnerable state right now.
On July 1, 2024, a cat came to the door of our volunteer’s home, and literally a minute later she went into labor. In a short time, 6 healthy, squeaking kittens were born. Our team rushed there, and we set up a relatively safe shelter for the mother and babies inside our volunteer’s fenced garden. That was the beginning of long daily shifts near the shelter.
But one day we were too late. Dogs got into the garden under the fence and threw aside the very heavy doors of the shelter. When our volunteer reached the place of the tragedy and rushed to fight the dogs off, it was already too late. The kittens had died, and the mother cat had managed to escape.
When we gathered the bodies, one was missing: the weakest and quietest kitten. A miracle had happened — that one kitten survived by hiding between the boards. That is how our Luna, little Lou, came to us. Luna was urgently taken to the clinic, and we continued bottle-feeding her with formula. You can read her story on her page.
We later managed to catch the frightened mother cat as well. By then we had learned that she had an owner: an elderly woman who could not afford to have her spayed and let the cat roam outside. A little later, the cat was spayed and returned to her owner.
